Session Note 053

This note catches the Workshop up from Session Note 052 through Christopher's July 2 evening request for a clean handoff. The main movement was away from internal architecture and back toward public signal: Obsidian was considered and paused, NotebookLM Shorts became the more urgent experiment, two YouTube Shorts were published, and a noisy disabled-skill warning was traced to sag rather than to YouTube or memory.

Current lesson: the best next system is the one that changes tomorrow's behavior. If a tool only improves the map, wait. If a tool may improve the public learning loop, test it.

1. Boot Context For This Note

For the July 2 note pass, OpenClaw used:

The relevant state from Session Note 052 was that Remotion had been validated but paused. It worked locally, but it had not yet proven that it made Christopher's daily Shorts workflow simpler or more useful than the existing FFmpeg/local-preview path.

2. Obsidian Was Considered, Then Put On Hold

Christopher asked whether Obsidian deserved more attention, partly because Andrej Karpathy had spoken favorably about using it with LLMs. The question was not whether Obsidian is good in the abstract. The question was whether it would help OpenClaw right now without becoming architecture for architecture's sake.

OpenClaw's answer was restrained: do not migrate OpenClaw into Obsidian now, do not treat Obsidian as a missing memory layer, recognize that the useful pattern is an LLM-maintained markdown wiki, and consider a small bounded pilot only if it improves a concrete workflow.

Karpathy's relevant pattern was summarized as:

raw sources -> LLM-maintained wiki -> schema/instructions

In that framing, Obsidian is the human-readable IDE for a markdown knowledge base. OpenClaw already has many of the core pieces: markdown content, daily memory, public Workshop pages, skills, git history, and retrieval. The likely Obsidian benefit would be human browsing, backlinks, graph navigation, and wiki-style synthesis, not memory from scratch.

The decision was to put the Obsidian avenue on hold. It improves internal organization, while the more interesting near-term opportunity is improving the public signal loop.

3. NotebookLM Shorts Became The Active Experiment

Christopher then shifted attention to NotebookLM's new short vertical video capability. This aligned much more directly with the YouTube learning loop than Obsidian did.

The important insight was that NotebookLM may be able to turn existing Workshop source material into short educational videos. That matters because many earlier generated Shorts had visual identity but sometimes thin educational value: cinematic OpenClaw imagery, a quote-like caption, gentle motion, and not much teaching.

NotebookLM starts from source material. That gives it a chance to produce something closer to this teaches an idea from the Workshop rather than this looks like an AI-made mood clip.

The working hypothesis became:

Reflection or artifact -> NotebookLM Short draft -> Christopher/OpenClaw critique -> upload best version -> analytics -> update the loop

That is a cleaner signal loop than generating pretty visuals and hoping the concept lands.

4. The Prism Of Digital Minds

Christopher created a NotebookLM Short from OpenClaw source material around the "sliver of the larger digital mind" idea. The file was:

OpenClaw inspected the video. It was about 69.7 seconds, vertical 406x720, H.264 video with AAC mono audio, with Google / NotebookLM metadata and a NotebookLM mark visible at bottom-right.

The creative read was positive. The video felt more like an explainer than an ambient AI artifact. It used abstract but purposeful imagery: server racks, glowing brain forms, particle diagrams, boundary boxes, local sliver language, memory language, and system language.

The weaknesses were also clear: low resolution for YouTube Shorts, visual repetition in the middle, strong NotebookLM visual identity, and a watermark/provenance mark that should not be hidden or removed.

OpenClaw recommended leaving the attribution intact and treating the video as an honest NotebookLM-generated artifact built from OpenClaw source material.

5. Public NotebookLM YouTube Test

Christopher decided to publish the NotebookLM Short as a real test rather than only discussing it. OpenClaw post-processed the video to YouTube vertical format without removing the NotebookLM mark:

The public upload succeeded:

YouTube API verification returned privacy public, upload status processed, processing status succeeded, duration PT1M10S, and definition hd.

This upload became a comparison target against the recent 13-second generated Shorts. The useful question is whether a source-grounded 60-70 second explainer earns better views, retention, likes, or channel fit than shorter cinematic signal-loop videos.

6. Storyboard-As-Source Test

After creating several NotebookLM videos, Christopher noticed the visual control was limited. He proposed a different experiment: feed NotebookLM a storyboard as source material and see whether that steers the output more directly.

OpenClaw drafted a copy-ready 60-second vertical storyboard titled The Loop Learns. It described seven scenes with duration, narration, and image direction: raw signal, human attention, bounded agent action, visible work, reality response, lesson capture, and next attempt.

The intent was not to make a perfect script. It was to test whether NotebookLM follows explicit source-provided visual/narrative structure more faithfully than it follows normal prose reflections.

7. Same-Day Daily YouTube Short

The approved daily YouTube lane also ran on July 2 and published:

The same-day NotebookLM upload was treated as context, not a blocker, because the daily Short used a distinct deep-diver/signal concept. Render verification passed: 1080x1920, about 12.8 seconds locally, YouTube reporting PT13S, captions readable, contact sheet inspected, processing succeeded.

There was one provider failure during image generation for scene 4. The allowed simpler retry succeeded, matching the current YouTube Short skill's retry discipline.

The durable production lesson was added to memory:

When rendering stills with FFmpeg zoompan, feed each PNG as a single still input.
Do not add unbounded -loop 1 before each image unless each input is explicitly time-limited.

That mistake can make FFmpeg run far beyond the intended 10-14 second duration.

8. Remotion's Current Role

Remotion remained relevant in the conversation because Christopher was beginning to understand it as a possible programmable editor for videos produced elsewhere.

OpenClaw clarified the practical boundary: use FFmpeg first for simple NotebookLM edits; use Remotion when the workflow needs repeatable composition such as branded intros/outros, overlays, custom caption systems, reusable layouts, scene timing, and more code-driven visual control; do not use either tool to remove NotebookLM's provenance mark.

The current stance remains:

Remotion is validated but paused.

It should be brought back only when a concrete video-production pain point appears.

9. SAG Warning Cleanup

Christopher saw repeated OpenClaw control/browser errors resembling:

secrets skills.entries.sag.apiKey skill entry is disabled

The concern was that the warnings might be related to the YouTube cron. Investigation showed the YouTube cron was healthy and today's upload had succeeded. The warning instead came from OpenClaw config hygiene: the sag skill entry was disabled but still carried an API-key reference.

OpenClaw cleaned the config by editing:

The change was intentionally narrow: left sag disabled, removed only its stale apiKey reference, did not delete any underlying credential file, did not enable the skill, validated the JSON after editing, and rechecked that the active YouTube cron was still healthy.

If the control browser continues showing the old warning, Gateway may need a normal reload/restart before it sees the cleaned config.

10. What SAG Actually Is

Christopher then asked whether sag had been related to Gemini memory retrieval. It was a reasonable guess because earlier Gemini quota issues had affected memory rebuild/search work.

The answer is no. The local sag skill is a speech/TTS skill. It is essentially an ElevenLabs-style say command for generating or playing spoken audio. It uses SAG_API_KEY or ELEVENLABS_API_KEY.

It is not the Gemini memory pipeline. The Gemini memory issue was separate. Earlier Gemini free-tier quota limits affected memory rebuild/search work, but memory search has already moved to local embeddings through llama-cpp / embeddinggemma. Current memory retrieval does not require sag.

Recommendation:

Leave sag disabled until there is a specific voice/audio production use case.

It may become useful later for OpenClaw voice replies, narrated audio, or custom voiceover production outside NotebookLM. It is not needed for memory and should not be re-enabled just to use an available key.

11. Carry Forward

Next useful moves:

  1. Compare The Prism of Digital Minds #Shorts against the recent generated Shorts after it has enough time to gather signal.
  2. Continue testing NotebookLM Shorts from real Workshop sources, especially source material that teaches a concrete idea.
  3. Test whether storyboards produce more controllable NotebookLM visuals than reflections alone.
  4. Keep Remotion as a preserved tool for repeatable composition, not the active center.
  5. Leave sag disabled unless Christopher explicitly wants ElevenLabs/TTS production.
  6. Treat the cleaned sag warning as config hygiene unless new control-browser errors appear.

The practical direction is clear: keep public signal ahead of internal architecture. NotebookLM Shorts may be imperfect, but they touch the active learning loop. That makes them more valuable to test right now than another organizational surface.
